FAQ

You should be able to find the answers to many of your questions in these FAQs.  Of course, if you don't you can always contact us.

All of our services are provided on the fastest Intel-based servers running Windows 2000 Server and Internet Information Server 5.0 (IIS).

IIS provides a fast and reliable Web Server and a highly configurable FTP server as well.  When you sign up with Bitcentric you get the power of Windows 2000 behind your site.

Our mail server is the powerful, configurable, and scalable MERAK Mail Server.  This allows us to offer generous email options in our plans, and allows our customers self-configuration options for their email domains.

You get all of that served up on a redundant OC3 connection that provides over 300 Mbps of bandwidth.  This is the speed you need in a hosting service.

Email

Bitcentric provides mail server capabilities for all of our customers.

Please use your local email client and POP3 to get your email from the Bitcentric mail server.  The POP server is mail.bitcentric.com.  Please use your local ISP's SMTP server for outgoing email.  The Bitcentric mail server is configured to deny sending mail.

Your login will be your full email address, e.x.  yourname@www.yourdomain.com.

When you sign up with Bitcentric you will receive an email domain administrator account that you can use to add more email accounts to your domain.

You will access the web-based email configuration tool by browsing to www.yourdomain.com:32000 or yourdomain.bitcentric.com:32000.

You will be prompted for a login and password.  Your login will be yourdomain@yourdomain.com  or yourdomain@yourdomain.bitcentric.com, based on the type of account you set up with Bitcentric.  Your password will be the password we assign to you when we create your hosting account.

You will be allowed to add and remove email accounts from your domain.  The maximum account creation limit is set based on the plan you purchased.  Additional email accounts  can be purchased for a small additional set-up fee.

FTP

FTP is the method by which you get your files to your web site.  FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is the widely accepted method of transferring files over the internet.

You can FTP your files to your website using several available FTP tools (we recommend CuteFTP) in the market as well as directly from many of the most popular web design software programs.

Bitcentric does not allow Anonymous FTP access.  You must use your assigned login and password to access your FTP site on the server.

When you sign up for a hosting plan you will be assigned a login and password for FTP use.  You can access your account by FTPing to your domain.  When you successfully connect to the Bitcentric server you will be placed into your account's home directory.  This home directory is where our web server will look for your files.  You can create files and folders anywhere under your directory.

Database

Bitcentric provides support for Microsoft Access as a database solution depending on the plan you have signed up for.

If you wish to use a DSN within your web site please contact us with your account name, Database file name and desired DSN name.  We will create the DSN and email you when we are done.

If you do not want to use a DSN then you can just FTP your MS Access .mdb file to your home directory and have your web page access it directly.  MS FrontPage2000 allows for easy Database access.

FrontPage

You can use FrontPage 2000 and the associated Server Extensions (depending on your hosting plan) when designing your web site.

FrontPage 2000 allows you to design and manage your web site easily and affordably.   This site was designed using FrontPage 2000 as an example of the nice sites that can be designed when using it.

When you connect to our server you should use your FTP login and password.  That will allow FrontPage to correctly hook you up to your directory on the server.

Referrals

For every customer referral you submit that purchases a hosting solution with Bitcentric , you will get the cost of a month of their service off of your next bill.  Eventually you could have your website hosted for free.*

So, if you have a $10/month plan and you refer someone who signs up for a $40/month plan, you will get a $40 credit.  That means 4 months free hosting for you!  The more you refer, the more you save!

Make sure when your friends sign-up they put you on the sign up form as the one that referred them.  We want you to get the credit you deserve!

Domains

You can transfer a 2nd level domain for use on your hosted site (if your plan permits it) or you can use a Bitcentric domain.  For example, a 2nd level domain is a domain that you must register and transfer to our DNS server.  A 2nd level domain has the following form...

                                www.yourdomain.com

If you choose to purchase and transfer your own domain to Bitcentric you will need the names of our DNS servers.  They are ns.bitcentric.com and ns2.bitcentric.com .

A Bitcentric domain (or sub domain) is of the following form...

                                yourdomain.bitcentric.com

This requires no other action on your part.  Bitcentric controls this domain.  When you sign up for service with Bitcentric you can pick the sub domain name of your choice and we will set it up for you.
